Foreword

Life in the Labs at HP Scotland -- David Green

The Hewlett-Packard of the last half of the 20th Century was an amazing international mix of technology and culture and people, with product development and sales facilities all around the world. It was magical, and rewarding, and enjoyable---the friendships, the accomplishments, the stunning benefits to humanity.

Our historical archives here have tried to document this remarkable mix of world-class teams of people. Dave and Bill's vision to expand development and production outside the USA is well described with many of these HPMemoirs. For the Scotland operations, Hugh Walker's massive historical writings embraced all that progress. John Wastle approached Scot operations from his most effective years in external procurements and supply chain accomplishments.

Then we had a number of US expatriates who told of their adventures as they moved to the UK at various times. Ray Smelek's Memoir picks up after John Doyle and John Cage had put the first manufacturing facility in at Bedford. Ray was directly involved in the Crown-mandated move out of the London-periphery to bring economy improvements to Scotland. Carl Cottrell didn't serve in the UK, but in his Geneva General Manager position, he oversaw all HP business in Europe. Al Steiner's Memoir tells of his HP life after he moved to International, with several years of service in the Scotland area.

But Hewlett Packard was a personal company. Bill and Dave cherished the personalization of corporate culture, management by objective, coffee and donut break discussions, yearly management visits to operations all over the world, outstanding health plans, newsletters, summer picnics with the bosses working the food serving lines.

So every personal memoir is a gem, because they bring a different perspective of their day in the "trenches," whether the lab or production or admin or sales. David Green adds to our compilations of the value and vision and heart of a great corporation.

HP Memories

This memory of David Green's career at hp results from the work of the www.hpmemoryproject.org website of Marc Mislanghe, who with John Minck edited and published the original archive of Memoirs. After Marc's untimely death in 2014, Ken Kuhn has now assumed the custodianship with John, and together they will continue to expand the Memoirs section.

One of the main objectives in starting this website in 2011 was (and still is today) to get in touch with people who have worked at hp from the birth of the company up to today. We are interested in hearing your memories no matter what division or country you worked in, or whether you were in engineering, marketing, finance, administration, or worked in a factory. This is because all of you have contributed to the story of this unique and successful enterprise.

Your memories are treasure for this website. While product and technology are our main concern, other writings related to the company life are highly welcome, as far as they stay inside the hp Way guidelines.
