Spectrum Analysis Measurement by HP

From the launch of the breakthrough HP 8551 Spectrum Analyzer in 1964, the long-term HP leadership in spectrum analysis measurement has provided the electronic engineering community with a considerable amount of technical documentation on the subject. Application notes, product notes and seminar literature have been published and updated each time a new product or an important technology evolution offered a step forward to the HP customer.

Below you will find the homemade PDF scans of the various documents available in our collection which will present the depth of HP's concern that customers will use every measurement advantage of the new product. The subjects range from understanding the various Spectrum Analysis Measurement Techniques in general, and with the HP 8568/66 systems in particular. In many ways they served as tutorial sessions, with technical detail equivalent to a college course.

"The Grand Classic" series
of Spectrum Analyzer Historical Application Notes

The AN150 series of application notes became almost a generic title for engineers. One by one they recap all the basic knowledge required to achieve the best measurements possible using the 1970-era spectrum analyzers. Today's spectrum analyzers integrate a lot of processor power to improve the ease of use and to gain in measurement accuracy. But the most sophisticated instruments don't replace a perfect knowledge of spectrum analysis fundamentals. Using an HP 8568 and practicing the AN150s examples will make you expert in just a couple of days. With the introduction of the first 8551A analyzer in 1964, HP introduced the concept of the "Frequency Domain Oscilloscope." While the time domain oscilloscopes had been working with calibrated time base displays, the spectrum analyzers featured calibrated frequencies on the horizontal display. This title served as a quick assurance that frequency domain was no more difficult to use than the familiar time domain.

Automated Noise Sideband Measurements Using the HP 8568A Spectrum Analyzer

The AN 270-2, deals with the direct spectrum analysis method of phase noise measurement. Using an HP 8568A, HP-IB controlled spectrum analyzer, the application note describes the possibilities and the limits of this, by far simplest, but very attractive technique of measuring the composite AM noise and phase noise of an oscillator. The technique depends on using the relatively noise-free local oscillator of the spectrum analyzer, and comparing the sideband noise of an oscillator under test.
